Steps will launch their Christmas tour at UK holiday camp Butlins as a thank you for helping kickstart H and Lisa’s careers when they were just twinkles in Pete Waterman’s eye. ‘We’re going to be visiting Butlins before we start our arena tour which will be around November time,’ Lisa told worldpop. ‘This is our Christmas arena tour and Butlins is going to be the kick off of the tour.’ Although Steps are used to selling out 12,000 seat arenas, they’ve made a special concession for Butlins and will play a one-off show at a smaller venue. ‘They’ve actually built a whole new venue for us,’ H explained. ‘It’s going to be a huge marquee that seats around 5,000 people.’ H credits the holiday camp for giving him his first start in the music business. ‘I didn’t have the cash to go to stage school or any performing arts school, so I basically learnt my trade at Butlins. Before I went to Butlins I’d never actually spoken on a mike on stage.’ Lisa has similar humble beginnings, again largely thanks to Butlins. ‘People don’t realise this but when H was at Minehead in Somerset as a Red Coat I was a visiting cabaret with my group,’ she said. ‘I used to go up and down the country to various Butlins and other resorts, and he was actually there at the same time.
