Steps miss number one by 3,300 copies
It was an extremely tightly-fought battle all week and on Friday night it looked as though Steps had the number one… but today tragedy struck. Ricky Martin beat Steps by only 3300 copies of his single Livin La Vida Loca. The reason for the slow sales of the Steps single was purely the price. Quite why the PR guys priced the singles at £3.99 on the day of release on such a vital record still remains a mystery. But as the majority of their fans are young they cannot afford the hefty £7.98 for two CDs. So instead of walking out of the shop with two CDs for £3.99 the fans only got one. And CD2 got a LOT of bad press on radio and across the internet. So let this be a lesson to the PR guys behind the group, we should NEVER have to pay so much for a single. Other reasons for the low sales include little radio play and perhaps too many TV appearances.
