Thank ABBA For The Music
There was an astounding ABBA tribute performed by Steps, B*witched, Billie Piper, Cleopatra and Tina Cousins at the 1999 Brit awards. This couldn’t have come at a better time. Steps have been compared to the Swedish super group ever since they started out. And even if we don’t get a cover of an ABBA song by Steps, I will certainly be content with this performance. The performance consisted of a medley of the most famous ABBA songs headed by Steps. The group were all dressed in suitably ABBA outfits. Once finished, ABBA member Bjorn Ulvaeus came out to present the next award and to plug his new West End musical Mamma Mia. He commented on how touching the performance was and thanked the groups. My only wish now is that Steps actually cover and release an ABBA song. In my opinion the most fitting song is “On and On and On” from the album Supertrouper. This particular song seems to fit their style perfectly, and concentrates on entertainment rather than deep meanings. Well, there is my request to the greatest group since the seventies. It should also be mentioned that Steps were nominated for Best British Newcomer. But sadly they were beaten by a band that is virtually unknown: Belle & Sebastian. The competition was high though with other massive bands such as 5ive and the mistress of music Billie Piper. Bad luck guys, maybe next time!
