Heartbeat / Tragedy was the fourth single released by Steps. Heartbeat was written by Jackie James and was the first ballad released as a single by the group. In 2012, producer Pete Waterman revealed that the song had "sat in a drawer" for years before he gave it to the band to record. Tragedy was originally a hit for the Bee Gees. The single hit the number one spot in the UK singles chart, giving the group its first number one.
